Dear sir or madam,
I am currently a 2nd year student majoring in Computer Engineering from National University of Singapore (NUS). And I am writing to apply for the internship from May to July. To be an engineer, I always want to apply my knowledge in workplace. And HP is the one that I want to be involved in. I believe I am well qualified for your requirements and I would contribute my best to your programs.
Programming languages are the basic tools of computer engineers. With strong skills of C/C++ programming, I am familiar with the object oriented programming style, as well as different data types and their implementations. From my own interest, I am also self-learning C# and Java. In addition of above high level languages, I am going to finish “assembly language” this semester. Therefore, I have enough confidence in understanding your OSR system within a reasonable time. My ability of modeling real problems into prototypes will be enhanced after I finish learning “software engineering” this semester. Besides of the software knowledge, my major also focuses on hardware knowledge. The knowledge of hardware mechanism helps to differentiate me from general programmers. And I believe this will contribute to your project in a positive way.
I can cope with stress easily as I am also engaged in various activities outside the busy academic life. I am keen on community service, thus I join the “Uni-Youth club” and “NUSSU Volunteer Action Committee” to give back to society. Besides, I am also a vocalist in Geyao, which is under NUS Chinese Society. And on 31 Jan 2011, my team held the “Chinese New Year Celebration gala”, which we had prepared for 1 month and attracted nearly 300 audience. Therefore, I believe I can work effectively in a team as well as individually.
I am looking forward to an interview as you may know more about me. I believe you would definitely select me. And thank you for your time.
Yours sincerely,
Zhang Jiao

ReplyDeleteHi Zhang Jiao,
ReplyDeleteIt’s good that you mentioned you are self-learning the programming languages C# and Java. It impresses upon the employers that you are an independent learner of highly complex concepts; a definite bonus point. It’s also good that you mentioned of co-curricular activities that you are involved. It displays a well-balanced way of leading life and the ability to work well in a team.
Perhaps it’s best to not start your sentences with the conjunction "and", as per the sentence: "And I am writing to apply for the internship from May to July." as well ass “And thank you for your time." It might display a degree of informality that is unsuitable for the application letter.
Overall, a very concise and well-substantiated application letter that is straight to the point. I wish you all the best in your internship.
Hey Zhang Jiao,
ReplyDeleteYou typed out a nice and coherent application letter that does shows the potential employers your many facets and capabilities. But perhaps it would be better to share any successful programming projects that you have major contributions in, which would be more relevant than your cultural involvement as a vocalist that does not seem as being part of the planning/organizing committee.
As the internship does not focus that much on interpersonal skills, what you have typed is more than sufficient and should be able to secure you an interview.

Hi Zhang Jiao
ReplyDeleteI guess you should change the theme of your blog because I have difficulties reading your job description.
In your application letter, you mentioned at the second last paragraph that you participated in the “Chinese New Year Celebration gala”. However, you did not elaborate how this participation helped to make you a better team worker or leader. You should elaborate the process of acquiring the abovementioned skills to make the point more complete.
Next, you attempted to distinguish yourself from normal programmers by bringing up your hardware knowledge and skills. However, you did not elaborate on how such hardware knowledge can benefit the company on the whole. Perhaps you can convince them by saying that such skills will allow you to service and troubleshoot certain hardware issues in their IT infrastructure if needed. This should definitely make your application letter sound more impressive since you will have more to offer.
These are all the feedback I have for you. I wish you all the best for your internship, if you are truly applying for one.
Best Regards
Chung
Hello there!
ReplyDeleteI feel your general job application is convincing, because of your abundant knowledge in programming.
However, I felt there are some areas of improvements.
Firstly, simply stating HP is the company you want to be involving does not make HP sound special. It could be made better by emphasizing its good working environment maybe?
Also, for your last paragraph, I felt there was a abrupt jump from coping with work stress to being keen on community work. My suggestion would be to join emphasize your ability to perform and handle a large crowd, despite its high stress levels.
Lastly, I felt there were quite a number of grammatical mistake which you could correct, to make your job application even more fluent.
Do hope you'll clinch this job opportunity!:)
Cheers,
Jiaai
Hey Zhang Jiao,
ReplyDeleteJust a thought on how you could phrase some points in the paragraph describing your extracurricular activities. This may better describe how you can meet their needs, and the employer can identify the qualities you have.
- ‘Besides academic pursuits, I participate actively in school activities. I can cope with stress as I excel in both extra-curricular activities and academics.’
- ‘I have helped to organise the “Chinese New Year Celebration Gala”, which attracted nearly 300 audiences. The success of the event is testament to the good working relationship and effective communication I possess. Such a quality indicates my ability to assign tasks clearly to my teammates (if you hold a leadership position), a cordial working relationship is also needed for smooth functioning of any event.’
And in your last paragraph, ‘I believe you would definitely select me’ sounds a little egotistical. It could be phrased as ‘I would appreciate an opportunity to contribute to Hewlett Packard aspirations of inventing new and innovative technological solutions. I believe I can be an asset to the team with my desirable skills and knowledge. ‘
Your application letter definitely looks more concise now, compared to your very first draft. Great job!

Jerina
